Look Around Your Shop Floor. That’s the Story.

There’s a story American manufacturing doesn’t tell often enough, and you can see it from where you’re standing. Look around the shop floor. The machinist dialing in a tolerance, the setup hand who can hear a cut going wrong before the gauge catches it, the welder whose bead you’d know anywhere — across this country, a huge share of them are Hispanic and Latino. Not at the edges of the trade. At the heart of it.

From September 15 to October 15, we mark Hispanic Heritage Month. And in manufacturing, this isn’t a ceremonial nod — it’s a recognition of the people who quite literally keep the line running.

The numbers back it up: Hispanic and Latino workers are one of the largest and fastest-growing forces in American manufacturing. Every day, the parts that move through this industry — the components in your car, your phone, the aircraft overhead, the implant that saved someone’s life — pass through their hands. When people talk about the skill that built this country, they don’t always say it out loud: a great deal of that skill is Hispanic and Latino, and it has been for generations.

It reaches the top of the field, too. Ellen Ochoa — an electrical engineer with three patents to her name — became the first Hispanic woman in space and went on to run NASA’s Johnson Space Center. But here’s the thing worth remembering: for every name like hers, there are ten thousand you’ll never read about — the toolmaker who trained half the shop, the machinist who’s held the same impossible tolerance for thirty years, the mentor who made room for the next person to learn. The craft moves forward on their shoulders.

That’s what this month honors. Not a list of famous names — the whole tradition, from the newest apprentice to the shop owner who started on the floor.

So here’s our ask: this Hispanic Heritage Month, take a second to recognize the people who make your shop run. Let’s give the people who build this country the recognition they’ve earned.
